Hallandale Beach, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Local stakes winner Bluegrass Singer is most likely to start in Saturdays $400,000 Holy Bull Stakes over the days $150,000 Hutcheson Stakes at Gulfstream Park. The 1 1/16-mile Holy Bull offers points as part of the Kentucky Derby qualifying system unlike the seven-furlong Hutcheson, both important prep races, however, for 3-year-olds leading to the Florida Derby on March 28. Im leaning toward the Holy Bull, Bluegrass Singers trainer Marcus Vitali said. Im trying to get some points together, and thats kind of my decision. (jockey Javier Castellano) Javiers got the assignment, and those two got along really good last time. I just think weve got to take our chances, hope for the best and shoot for the sky. Bluegrass Singer, owned by Cross Sabres Farm, has drawn post 4 for the 10- horse Holy Bull and the far outside post for the eight-horse Hutcheson. Jockey Rafael Hernandez is listed for the Hutcheson. Bluegrass Singer, with Castellano riding, led most of the way in winning the Mucho Macho Man Stakes at Gulfstream on Jan. 3. I brought him back into the race easy off the last race, being just three weeks between races. I figured hes run so many times and hes the kind of horse that keeps himself fit anyway, Vitali said. It can be kind of a tricky situation when youre pointing for two races. Youve got to train them a little different for either race. I just did my best and the horse responded to everything perfect. Hes coming into the race excellent. Bluegrass Singer has won three of seven starts for $119,835. The 2-1 morning line favorite for the Holy Bull is Upstart, owned by Ralph M. Evans and trained by Richard Violette. The colt will be ridden by Jose Ortiz from post 8 in his 2015 debut. Hes filled out. He was a little big leggy as a 2-year-old. I dont think hes gotten any taller, but theres a little more muscle to him; hes a little bit squarer. He looks more like an older horse than a baby now, Violette said. Hes pretty sharp and confident, without being mean. He has a really nice eye. Hes pretty correct. Hes a pretty clever horse. Upstart was first or second in his first three starts before getting third in the Breeders Cup Juvenile. Ortiz has been in the saddle all four times as the colt has banked $463,800. He ran a really good second and was kind of up against it in the Champagne. He confirmed his quality and he just got nailed for second in the Breeders Cup despite not having a whole lot in his favor. Hes underlining that hes a significantly good horse, Violette said. Certainly, he belongs in the elite of the 3-year-olds this year, as long as he proves it. Hes more than just a nice New York-bred; hes a nice horse. Also making his 3-year-old debut Saturday will be 5-2 second pick Frosted, trained by Kiaran McLaughlin for Godolphin Racing. The gray colt will again be ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr. from the inside post. Hes been training great. Hes doing great, said McLaughlin. Frosted was second his first two starts before winning at Aqueduct on Oct. 30. On Nov. 29 he was second, beaten a half-length, to Leave the Light On in the Remsen at Aqueduct. He ran huge. He had the 13 hole, the track was a conveyor belt, and he was unlucky to lose. Hes a very nice horse, said McLaughlin. Frosted has earned $150,600. Here is the field for the Holy Bull in post position order: Frosted, Irad Ortiz Jr.; Keen Ice, Edgard Zayas; High Noon Rider, Joel Rosario; Bluegrass Singer, Javier Castellano; Juan and Bina, Jose Lezcano; First Down, Rajiv Maragh; Frammento, Luis Saez; Upstart, Jose Ortiz; Dom the Bomb, Rafael Hernandez and Decision Day, John Velazquez. Keuchel outpitched Drew Smyly, and the Houston Astros beat Detroit 6-2 on Thursday to snap the Tigers eight-game winning streak. Keuchel and Smyly both pitched for the Arkansas team that reached the College World Series in 2009, but on this day, Keuchel had more important concerns than watching his fellow left-hander throw. "I honestly didnt see a single pitch from him," Keuchel said. "I was in the tunnel. It was kind of hot today for Detroit right now, and I was just trying to stay cool as much as possible." Keuchel (3-2) allowed two runs and six hits in 7 2-3 innings, and Houston ended its five-game losing streak. The Astros broke through with three runs in the fifth off Smyly (2-2) to take the lead. Houstons George Springer, a first-round draft pick in 2011, hit his first major league homer. Carlos Corporan and Matt Dominguez also went deep for the Astros. Victor Martinez homered for the Tigers. Smyly allowed only one hit — an infield single — through the first four innings, but his outing took a turn for the worse in the fifth when Springer lined a one-out solo homer over the wall in right. "Its obviously good to hit something hard and to have a great result like that," said Springer, who planned to give the home run ball to his father. "I didnt try to do too much — was able to stay on it and hit it hard, and for me thats a great sign." Jose Altuve put the Astros ahead 3-2 with a two-run double later that inning. Smyly allowed three runs and five hits in 5 1-3 innings. He struck out two and walked three. Corporan homered off reliever Evan Reed in the seventh to make it 4-2. Keuchel struck out seven without a walk, navigating a tough Detroit lineup wiithout too much difficulty.dddddddddddd "I wont be talking to him for a while," Smyly joked. "I thought hed do OK, but hes a lefty and with our offence, I thought wed get to him. Hes a very smart pitcher and hes a bulldog, and we couldnt do anything with him. Thats as good as Ive seen him, and you have to tip your hat." Keuchels final big test came in the seventh, when Detroit put men on first and third with two out. Keuchel struck out pinch-hitter Torii Hunter to end the inning. The temperature at game time was 77 degrees, and Keuchel said his decision to ignore Smylys pitching was nothing personal. "On the more humid days, Ill try to go in and keep cool in between innings, so I dont usually watch the other pitcher," he said. "In this case, it was my college roommate, so Im sure hell be mad I didnt see a few pitches." Miguel Cabrera came to the plate in the eighth after Ian Kinslers single chased Keuchel, but the best the Detroit slugger could do against reliever Anthony Bass was a soft grounder to second. Dominguez hit a two-run homer in the ninth. The Tigers opened the scoring in the second on an RBI double by Nick Castellanos. Springer, who came close to preventing a homer by Cabrera the previous night, nearly caught this drive too, but it caromed off the wall in right field. Martinez hit his seventh homer of the year in the fourth. He finished the day with three hits, extending his hitting streak to 11. NOTES: Houston OF L.J.
